This post is part of a series called One Year in Sound by sound designer Carlo Ascrizzi.
Time to start your Final Project!
As you probably remember it is a matter of time management:Â you have set in stone deadlines and you should achieve your best in that short time.
That’s why Term 6 is arranged in a way that you have a busy schedule, including meetings, reviews and technical playbacks.
The first day of class the Head of Department will show you the entire thing, including your personal meetings. Once a week you will have an individual review, where he will check your progress, your achievements at that particular time, and finally your next steps…
In addition, still once a week, you have another individual meeting, every time with a different instructor. It will be really useful because it is not only a way to have different feedbacks from different professional point of views, but also a great chance to get priceless tips and tricks!
All the reviews and meetings are subjected to marks; you receive grads on your professionalism, as well as the quality of your actual progress.
Everyone has got a different final project, different approaches and different stuff to do, meaning that within the main schedule and deadlines you will build a personal work style outline.
The first week is about planning your work. So, in your reviews, you will be asked to hand the spotting notes and the Pro Tools spotting sessions in your personal schedule. Also you should have thought how to approach your work, before your first review and now you are going to discuss about it. Among them, you will talk about the sound style you want to aim at, the several technics you are planning to use, breaking up sounds and categories, to finally make an efficient workflow. Your editorial work has started as well.
Instead in the second week meetings, you will be marked on your first practical steps, regarding your specific needs. If, as an example, you have dialogue in your piece, you should record it now. Also you have already started recording foley or any field recording you may need. The goal is to complete your recording work during this week, in order to be totally focused on the editing on the next one.
If you need to accomplish a lot of special sound effects and crazy sound design in your piece, then it is the right time to experiment and mess around, trying things and creating as much material as you can.
Third week is when everything about foley, dialogues and field recording should be done. Eventually you will just have time for fixes. The music of your piece has to be in place too. This means that, whether if you are a composer or you had music from the archive, your music edit is over and ready for the mix stage.
Generally speaking, in the third week the overall editorial work should be well on its way, if not completed.
On top of all of this, please try to not freak out!!
